Something by the Sea

August, 2009 Århus,

Denmark

In June 2009, 60 works by Australian and Danish artists were presented along the beaches south of Århus harbor. The three and a half week exhibition – produced in association with the City of Århus and ARoS Kunstmuseum, under the patronage of The Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark – took its name and concept from “Sculpture by the Sea,” held annually in Bondi, Australia since 1997. The works were chosen by curators from both countries. Most of these were for sale.

In response, a group of 15 local artists staged an exhibition in late August 2009 at sections of the site of the Danish show – the Marselisborg and Balenhage Zones. The works vary in form, materials, and dimension, and not curated per se, but were proposed and discussed by the group over the course of the three months leading up to the exhibition. The show lasted ten days through the end of August and was called “Something by the Sea.”
